Why do some people dislike intelligent, diligent students in high school?

I went to a school where it was "cool" to be dumb, and I have to admit I played along with it to some extent. But looking back, I regret not trying harder and becoming more diligent as a highschooler which would have been a great benefit to me now. Try not to be affected by those kinds of people. They will regret it later.
